Top tips to relax and unwind on holiday
Holidays are a time to relax and recharge, to switch off from the daily grind and enjoy a well-deserved rest. The build-up to a holiday can be a stressful time – finishing your to-do list at work, ensuring everything is packed for the kids, leaving the house tidy, but the moment you arrive at your destination doesn’t always guarantee that sense of And…relax…. switching off is not always as easy as it sounds.
It can in fact take up to three days to fully unwind and if you’re only away for a week, that doesn’t leave long to get that much-needed rest in. So how can you quickly unwind and get that holiday vibe fast?
Wassen Nutritionist Emma Bullock-Lynch gives her five top tips for your summer slowdown.
- Go Tech-Free
We have all become so reliant on our technology, whether that’s our mobile phones, tablets or smart watch, constantly checking our social media or the latest email at the sound of a ping. As wonderful as technology can be, being constantly switched on is a drain on our own resources and can keep our stress levels raised. Why not literally ‘switch off’ and try some tech-free, digi-downtime.
If reading is your thing on holiday, opt for a good old-fashioned paperback and not rely on a device. Having a break from screens can be so beneficial not only to our minds but also our eyes. Plus, with a book in hand there’s no need to constantly be moving yourself to reduce any screen glare, you can just sit back, put your feet up and relax.
- Stretch and Breathe
Start your holiday by making time for your mind and body, with some gentle movement such as yoga. It’s a great way to stretch your body getting rid of any travel tension and pre-trip worries. A morning yoga session is also a great way to start the day and get your mind into a peaceful mindset, with added focus on your breathing which in turn can bring calmness to the mind and body. Practicing activities such as yoga and mindfulness daily while away can lead to new daily habits to adopt when you return home and need those me-time moments.
- Eat and drink well (but not too well)
Delicious dishes and mouth-watering cocktails are part of the holiday experience. In our busy lives, we often need to eat on-the-go or rush our mealtimes, but make a point on holiday to really saviour your food and drink, enjoy the dining experience as a whole and dedicate this time to help you relax. However, whilst every holiday should allow a little overindulgence, be mindful this is also an opportunity to nourish your mind and body well too.
- Organised Fun
If you’re going on holiday with a large group or with children, planning some structure to the trip could save on any unnecessary stress while away. If there is a kids club or certain activities you know your children will want to do try and book them in advance, the same applies to ‘must-see’ sights or restaurants with ‘that’ dish, which you know will book up quickly. By planning a few things that you know everyone will enjoy can help avoid the moments of ‘I’m bored’, ‘What are we doing today?’ or ‘Where shall we eat tonight?’, and ultimately reduce those last-minute moments of stress, leaving you to relax and enjoy more.
