Healing Side of Ibiza: Solo Travel to the Soul of Ibiza
Fifteen years ago, I fell in love with Ibiza. The island has been a cherished escape for my family and me, providing countless memories of sun-kissed beaches and vibrant nightlife. However, this year, I had a yearning to experience Ibiza from a different perspective – as a solo traveller. This time, it wasn’t about the family-friendly spots or bustling nightlife, but rather about connecting with the island’s tranquil and rejuvenating side. I decided to explore Ibiza on my own, immersing myself in its natural beauty and indulging in the health and wellbeing experiences it has to offer.
When people think of Ibiza, they often picture wild parties and loud nightclubs, but there is a whole other side to this island that is equally enchanting. I wanted to share my journey with fellow female travellers, encouraging them to discover the quieter, more soulful side of Ibiza, especially during the off-season months of April to June or September to October, when the island is less crowded and more serene.
Day 1: Arrival and First Impressions
I arrived in Ibiza late in the evening, and despite my initial concerns about feeling lonely, I was determined to make the most of my solo adventure. Instead of staying in my room at the Buenavista Boutique Hotel, I headed straight down to the seafront in Santa Eulalia. This charming town, known for its relaxed atmosphere and beautiful palm-lined promenade, felt like the perfect starting point for my journey.
The Buenavista Boutique Hotel, situated in the historical and artistic heritage old town of Santa Eulalia, is a cozy, romantic retreat with a bohemian vibe. The Mediterranean garden and the colonial-style architecture added a touch of magic to my stay. This hotel, the first in Santa Eulalia, dates back to 1933 and has a rich history, offering a unique blend of modern comforts and historical charm.
After a stroll by the sea, I returned to the hotel, feeling comforted by the gentle sound of the waves. The next morning, I woke up early, excited to explore the town. Santa Eulalia, Ibiza’s third-largest resort, is only 21 kilometers from the airport. Known for its gastronomic and cultural scene, it offers a slower, more relaxing pace of life, which was exactly what I needed.
Day 2: Exploring Santa Eulalia
My first day was spent exploring Santa Eulalia. I walked up the hill to Puig de Missa, a small white church overlooking the town. The peaceful ambiance and charming interior of the church provided a perfect start to my day. For dinner, I chose Iza, a restaurant overlooking the sea. The fresh fish and potatoes paired with a mojito made for a perfect meal. As a solo diner, I found the experience very relaxing, and I even met another solo traveler. We chatted about health and wellbeing, and she shared her plans to join a retreat at Six Senses in Portinax.
Day 3: Dawn Photoshoot and Hidden Coves
The next morning, I had arranged a dawn photoshoot with a local photographer at Cala Mastella, a hidden cove surrounded by cliffs. This tiny, unspoiled beach with its clear, calm waters and bohemian vibe was a true gem. This is the perfect hidden cove for snorkelling and enjoying the serene environment. For lunch, you can visited the beach bar or the famous El Bigotes restaurant in the next cove, known for its fresh fish caught daily. The experience of dining without a menu, enjoying whatever the fishermen had brought in, is a unique experience if you can get a reservation!
In the afternoon, I returned to the hotel for some rest and relaxation by the pool. Later, I met my new friend for dinner at Rias Atenea, a restaurant that had just reopened. We enjoyed a delicious meal and the conversation flowed easily, making for a wonderful evening.
Day 4: Morning Swim and Ibiza Town
I started the next day with a morning swim in the sea, followed by breakfast at Passion Cafe. Their Ayurvedic Latte and Salmon & Eggs Royal were the perfect fuel for the day ahead. In the afternoon, I took a ferry to Ibiza Town. The journey offered spectacular views and a chance to see the island from a different perspective.
Ibiza Town is a vibrant place with boutique shops, narrow streets, and hidden restaurants and bars. I stumbled upon Bar San Ciriaco, a tiny bar established in 1943, with just enough space for a few bar stools, where I enjoyed some strong mojitos. After exploring the town, I walked towards Talamanca and the yacht marinas. The sight of luxurious yachts and the lively atmosphere was a stark contrast to the peaceful beaches I had visited earlier.
For dinner, I chose Laylah, a restaurant that offers a unique culinary journey through Middle Eastern flavours. The communal style of dining and the welcoming ambiance made it a special experience for a solo traveller. The exotic dishes and enchanting atmosphere made for an unforgettable evening.
Day 5: Yoga and Spa Day
On my last morning, I headed to Nativo for a sunrise yoga session on their roof terrace overlooking the sea. Nativo Hotel, located in the tranquil residential area of Siesta, offers a barefoot luxury experience surrounded by gardens, terraces, and natural light. The yoga session was the perfect way to start the day, leaving me feeling refreshed and centered.
After yoga, I visited the Revival Spa at Aguas de Ibiza. I had the privilege and seeing this hotel 15 years ago, just after their opening in 2008. This time I got a glimpse of their spectacular panoramic view roof terrace and stunning infinity pool before heading to their Revival Spa by Clarins. This spa, inspired by nature, offers a calming environment for physical, mental, and spiritual wellbeing. I indulged in various pools, including the Thalasso pool, and even took a dip in the ice-cold plunge pool. I finished the day with a Clarins facial, feeling rejuvenated and relaxed.
Final Evening: STK Ibiza
For my final evening, I indulged in dinner at STK Ibiza. Arriving for the first sitting at 8 PM, the restaurant soon filled with groups of friends, all dressed to impress. The menu catered to various dietary preferences, and I enjoyed a selection of dishes recommended by my server, Victoria. The highlight of the evening was the cocktails and entertainment. The Green Forest, a tequila-based cocktail, and the Cleopatra, made with Bombay Sapphire Gin, were both delightful.
As a solo traveller, STK Ibiza was a great place to soak up the party atmosphere and enjoy wonderful food and entertainment. While I might not return alone, it is definitely a place I would visit again with friends.
Reflections and Future Plans
In five days, I experienced the quiet beaches, enjoyed fabulous food, walked 20,000 steps a day, practiced morning yoga, rejuventated in a tranquil spa and met lovely people. I never once felt lonely and felt very much at home on the island. While I love travelling to Ibiza with my family, this solo trip allowed me to connect with the island in a new and meaningful way.
For female travellers seeking a solo adventure, Ibiza offers a perfect blend of relaxation and excitement. The off-season months of April to June or September to October provide a quieter, more serene experience, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the island’s beauty and tranquility. Whether you’re exploring hidden coves, indulging in delicious cuisine, or enjoying a spa day, Ibiza has something for everyone.
My next solo visit is already in the planning stages, and I look forward to discovering even more of the island’s hidden gems. Ibiza is not just a party destination; it is a place of healing and rejuvenation, waiting to be explored.
