Why Travel is Good for your Mental Wellbeing

The idea of going stir-crazy is something that many of us became uncomfortably familiar with over the course of the Covid-19 lockdowns. Being prevented from getting out and about, just about everyone recognises, is not great for your state of mind. And there’s reason to suppose that getting about as often as possible can confer some substantial benefits, when it comes to mental wellbeing.
So, what exactly are these benefits?
Travel facilitates self-reinvention
Every so often, it pays to take a step back from the coal face of day-to-day life, and reflect on what it is that you’re doing with your time on Planet Earth, and how and why you’re doing it. Time spent travelling can provide exactly the required perspective, and help you to make better life decisions. You might return from a break, reinvigorated and ready to steer your life in a whole new direction!
Travel encourages exploration and new hobbies
In many cases, travel can require us to venture outside of our comfort zones. We might try new things – whether it’s an unfamiliar cuisine, or a sport we’ve never attempted before. Traveling on two wheels whilst on a cycling holiday is a wonderful opportunity to fall in love with the sport. Mountain biking is a sport that offers specific advantages such as improving your mental wellbeing and better posture.
For one thing, it will get you out into the open air, and surrounded by nature. This is something that just about everyone finds refreshing; there’s good evidence to suggest that time in nature helps to develop overall mental health. A sense of exploration matters, too, so being surrounded by an unfamiliar kind of nature ticks several therapeutic boxes.
For another, mountain biking will allow you to focus on a specific goal, which can provide a distraction from whatever other problems you might have in your life. If you’re concentrating all of your attention on what’s around the next bend, then there’s little room for worrying about anything else!
Travel provides a break from work
Even if you’re not entirely aware of it, the daily grind of work can put a strain on your wellbeing. The occasional spot of novelty can work wonders, and travel can provide it. You’ll return with your brain having been literally rewired.
Travel builds mental resilience
Spend too long in the same place, and you risk developing a fear of what’s out there. When you build some experience travelling, however, you’ll feel excited by the world around you, rather than intimidated by it. You’ll get the sense of adaptability, patience, and emotional resilience that comes from deliberately venturing beyond your comfort zone!
Travelling is something that just about everyone can benefit from. And it needn’t cost the earth, either – many of these benefits can be had by travelling within the UK, or to some of the world’s more inexpensive destinations. As such, you don’t need deep pockets to enjoy the mental benefits of travel.
